Going back to the source and following the organizations you are interested in is becoming easier and easier as almost every major organization is now using social media. But then again, the abundancy has its drawbacks: it’s not easy to find and pick the news sources that are really worth paying attention to. In our year-end post, Fundraisr.org has compiled a definitive list of 11 charity organizations that are worth keeping an eye on in 2011. From children’s charities to environmental foundations, from major NGOs to intergovernemtal organizations these are the feeds that will surely feed your charity-hunger next year. Oxfam is a huge international alliance of 14 charity organizations working together in almost 100 countries on various projects. They work closely together with local communities focusing on poverty and human rights. Their Twitter feed includes frequent updates on their projects as well as the works and the issues their partner organizations are facing.

SOS Children’s Villages are present in some 132 countries worldwide, fighting children poverty, and aiming to give home to children in need. SOS Children’s Villages focuses on family-based, long-term care of children who can no longer grow up with their biological families. Their Twitter Feed includes heart-warming stories, galleries and regular updates on their works and projects.

Founded in 1946, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is the UNO’s official agency to protect children all over the world. The organization is undoubtedly the leading advocate for children’s rights, active in 190 countries through country programs and National Committees. Their numerous focus areas include basic education and gender equality, child protection, from violence exploitation or abuse, HIV/AIDS infected children and others. UNICEF’s Twitter feed is a good wrapup of the agency’s activities, at the time of this writing featuring a year-end look-back here.

Bill and Melinda Gates, one of the wealthiest couples on Earth, launched their foundation in 1994, amied at helping all people lead healthy, productive lives, focused on global health, global development, & U.S. education. The activities of the foundation are governed by a 15-point list of guiding principles. The Twitter feed of the foundation focuses on innovation in charities with quite a few inspiring stories and photographs.

Greenpeace are an independent, often conflict-seeker global campaigning organization that aims to change attitudes and behavior, to protect the environment and promote peace. Currently active across 40 countries, Greenpeace has been campaigning against environmental degradation since 1971. To maintain its independence it refuses funds from national governments and relies solely on donations from individual supporters and foundation grants. Greenpeace’s Twitter feed focuses mostly on environment-friendly solutions, ideas, as well as updates on the group’s activities and ongoing campaigns.

International animals’ rights agency, Peta’s Twitter feed is maintained by official twitterer Royale Ziegler, involving various guest-tweeters from time to time. The organization – known mostly for its sexy celeb supporters and provocative (sometimes shocking) campaign actions features shocking videos, sexy photos, and vegan-related recipes in their Twitter feed. Due to the laid back tone of the Twitter feed its a really lively, vivid source of information.

ISOH/Impact is an organization to reach out and serve others in disaster areas all around the world. Founded in 1958, the organization gained attention this year mostly with its effors and involvement following the Haiti earthquake. Their Twitter feed is directed more to their volunteers and internal members than to the public audience, but due to the great interest in the areas they work, it is still worth keeping an eye on them.

Based in Washington D.C. Earthshare is an association of various charities aimed to organize workplace giving campaigns to support hundreds of environmental charities. A workplace giving campaign is an annual, employer-sponsored program that lets employees contribute a few dollars per paycheck as their charitable donation. Currently representing some 70 organizations EarthShare raises funds for more than 400 community every year, national and international member charities in hundreds of campaigns at public and privates sector workplaces across the US. EarthShare’s Twitter feed includes news updates, personal discussions, photos and, obviously, updates on their ongoing activities.

Environmental Defense Fund are working directly with businesses, government and communities to create lasting solutions to the most serious environmental problems. Their areas of focus include Oceans, Land, Water and Wildlife, general health issues and global warming. Their Twitter feed features up-to-date studies, interesting stories on the environment, and amazing videos.

Nature Conservancy (aka. Nature.org) is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. Operating in over 30 countries, and all 50 US states, Nature Conservancy protects rivers, lands and are working on over 100 marine conservation projects. Their Twitter feed is focused on discussions, donations and activism.

Former US President Bill Clinton started to focus on various charity efforts and projects after leaving the White House in 2001. He established the William J. Clinton Foundation with the mission to alleviate poverty, improve global health, strengthen economies, and protect the environment, by fostering partnerships among governments, businesses, nongovernmental organizations, and private citizens — leveraging their expertise, resources, and passions — to turn good intentions into measurable results. Through its numerous initiatives and missions, the Clinton Foundation strives to change global systems, entire communities, and the way business is done in both developed and developing countries — while emphasizing solutions that make meaningful and positive changes in individual lives. The Clinton Foundation’s Twitter feed features personal messages from President Clinton as well as pictures and stories of the everyday activities of the Foundation. The feed has a special focus on the Haiti recovery efforts, and other projects that aim to tackle the poverty in the developing world.

It is especially so for UK-based charity Oxfam, that may be granted some 100,000 GBP ($148,000), in case Federer collects his seventh title.

The amazing stake is a result of a Hollywood-like will of a late fan of the swiss Tennis player, Mr. Nicholas Newlife. Newlife from Oxfordshire’s Kidlington bet 1,520GBP ($2,255) with William Hill in August 2003, saying that Federer will win seven Wimbledons before the year 2020. The odds for this at Hill were 66/1. Since then, Roger Federer has won six Wimbledon titles (the odds of him winning his seventh title sharply decreased to 6/4, despite being recently overtaken on the world ranking of professional tennis players by Rafael Nadal, after the spaniard won the Roland Garros tournament), and his seventh might be on its way in the upcoming days. Not only would this break the alltime record of Pete Sampras, but would result a payout of 101,840 GBP to the benefit of Oxfam charity.

Mr. Newlife died last February, aged 69, and left his entire estate to Oxfam. The unusual heritage included the betting slips for various cricket and tennis wagers.

“Mr Newlife made arrangements in his will to pass any profit from his bet on to his favored charity, Oxfam – a unique eventuality in our experience,” said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe talking to AFP news agency.

“We will, of course, be handing the profits from his far-sighted wager to them just as soon as Federer holds the trophy aloft for a seventh time.

“In the event that he fails to win this year – and he is 6/4 favourite to do so – the bet does not run out until 2019,” Sharpe added.

Federer will start out this year’s Wimbledon tour by meeting Alejandro Falla from Columbia. Theoretically he should not be a problem, but he will be followed by more advanced counterparts, such as Andy Roddick, Novak Djokovic and former Wimbledon-title holder Lleyton Hewitt. If Federer gets past all of them (as expected), he is supposed to meet World #1 Rafael Nadal in the final of the tournament. The guys at Oxfam, surely, will have their fingers crossed for Federer.

The Oxfam aid charity is an alliance of 14 different international organizations worldwide, fighting poverty, injustice, and seeking an impact on local communities in need. The umbrella organization covers some 3,000 local organizations, focusing their efforts on Development, Emergencies, Campaigning, Advocacy and Policy Research.
